What after BDS is a common pestering question. There are numerous options for the above question. Here I present you with the top 5 timeless options.
1. CLINIC:
To set up a clinic is the primary aim of almost every dental student. And starting your practice as early as possible is the best option available.
My opinion: Make sure your basic clinical skills are good and if you feel lag in some areas, work for a well-established dentist for some months, to get hold of what is missing.
But setting up a clinic is not as easy as it sounds. In another blogpost let us discuss the pros and cons of it.
2.POST-GRADUATION:
MDS is not just a degree, it is worth 3 years of experience. And PG in a good government institution means your financial needs are taken care of in the form of stipend.
My opinion: To aim and secure PG seat in a good institution needs dedication and patience while preparing. But once you are ready to give your maximum efforts, it is the best option after BDS.
3.GOVERNMENT JOB:
Goverment postings for dentistry as such is very limited in recent days. And recruitments are on contractual basis in many states. But you can aim for Public service commissions. Preparation for PSC exams are in itself an art and options are wide.
My opinion: Once you opt for PSC, your field will be not limited to dentistry any more and you need to widen your knowledge on many levels. The results for the efforts you make will be worth it.
4.RESEARCH:
Openings for Junior Research Fellowships are often announced by ICMR and its sister institutions. You can also refer websites of AIIMS and JIPMER for research assistant postings ( mostly contractual)
Masters in Public Health (MPH) is another option parallel to post graduation, which has wider scope pertaining to research and public health.
5.FOREIGN JOB OPPORTUNITIES:
Countries like UAE, Canada, Australia, US, UK are often considered. BUT these are the facts to remember,
- Each country has unique set of principles to be followed including the entrance examinations, and experience required.
- It may cost you more than the above options.
A friend or guide who has already cleared the procedures and formalities of a particular country, will be of immense help, when you aim for foreign opportunities.
